Abstract

Fuel optimal control of an off-road transport mission

To coordinate and optimise an off-road transport mission, on which a wheel loader and two articulated haulers cooperate, a fuel-optimal control algorithm is developed. The control algorithm utilises Pareto fronts of fuel consumption versus cycle time to establish optimal cycle times for the different sub-tasks. Human machine interfaces (HMI) are built to convey the optimal control signals to the operators. The control signal to the hauler operators is vehicle speed and to the loader operator it is cycle time. The system is tested in real world conditions and a fuel efficiency increase of 9% is found when compared to a baseline representing the situation where the machine operators have little knowledge about the cooperating machines activities and low eco driving skills.
