Variable Compression Engine

Variable Compression

The SAAB variable compression engine is an engine where the engine cylinder is hinged to the crank case and can be tilted by an hydraulic adjuster. Different tilt angles results in different clearance volumes which gives different compression ratios.

The basic idea

Use high compression ratio during low loads for high efficiency, and when the load increases then the compression ratio is decreased to match knocking and internal heat transfer. The result is a small super charged engine with high specific performance leading to good fuel consumption, but with performance equal to a larger engine.
